The planet is going through a new period marked by extreme weather phenomena, with dramatic effects on two continents. While torrential rains have caused at least 22 deaths and the disappearance of dozens of people in China, hundreds of firefighters are intervening in the southern state of California (USA) to extinguish vegetation fires that have led to the evacuation of thousands of residents.
• Catastrophic floods in China
The heavy rains that have affected central and northern China in recent days have caused the death of at least 22 people, and another 22 are missing, according to Chinese official media and information transmitted by AFP. In Hunan province, five people have died and another 11 are missing, and more than 61,500 residents have been affected by floods and landslides. In the autonomous region of Guangxi, ten people lost their lives after a truck was swept away by the waters of a swollen river. Guizhou province reported four deaths and five missing, while in Hubei another three people died and four were reported missing. Several villages were cut off due to the destruction of communication infrastructure.
• Tens of thousands of evacuees and emergency funds
Around 24,000 people have been evacuated from the worst-hit provinces, according to a centralization made by AFP. The Chinese government has mobilized 120 million yuan (about 15.2 million euros) to support the victims, to which another 30 million yuan is specifically intended for Guizhou province, one of the worst-hit areas. Meteorologists warn that the rains will continue in the coming days in central and southern China, maintaining a high risk of new floods and landslides.
• California wildfires: Thousands evacuated
At the same time, hundreds of firefighters are battling large-scale wildfires in Southern California at the start of the fire season, according to the DPA agency. The latest outbreak, dubbed "Verona," broke out near the city of Hemet, southeast of Los Angeles. According to the state authority Cal Fire, the fire is spreading at a "dangerous rate" and has not yet been brought under control. Two people - a firefighter and a civilian - suffered minor injuries. Authorities have issued evacuation orders in several districts. On Santa Rosa Island, off the coast of California, a fire has burned about 68 square kilometers and is 26% contained. According to the Los Angeles Times, this is the largest fire recorded in the island's modern history.
• Sandy Fire Threatens Simi Valley
Near Simi Valley, northwest of Los Angeles, the Sandy Fire was about 5% contained and had spread to nearly 2.5 square miles. At least one home was destroyed. At one point, about 29,000 people were under evacuation orders and warnings, but that number has since dropped to about 17,000.
• Climate Change Intensifies Extreme Events
Both the devastating floods in China and the wildfires in California illustrate the increasingly visible impact of climate change on ecosystems and human communities. China, the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases, has committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, while California continues to face longer and more intense fire seasons. Experts warn that such extreme events, once considered exceptional, are becoming more frequent and severe, underscoring the need to accelerate global measures to reduce emissions and adapt to new climate realities.
